HF Fund History
The
HF Fund is a charitable foundation committed to helping Oregon and its citizens
in a variety of ways. Established in 1996, the Fund has evolved from a scholarship
program focused on the working student entering the helping professions -- particularly
teaching and nursing -- into programs that grant educational scholarships, and
support a variety of philanthropic organizations.
Mission Statement
The mission of the HF Fund is to help Oregonians acquire the knowledge, skills
and resources necessary to achieve their potential. Education is the cornerstone
of this mission. Therefore, the HF Fund strives to make education accessible to
students across the state and to be a source of support along the way. The HF
Fund also reaches beyond education and contributes to charitable organizations
that provide the foundation of a healthy and productive society.
The HF Fund provides access to education through scholarship
and direct assistance programs:
Friends of Oregon Students Fund (FOOSF)
Working with the Oregon
Student Assistance Commission (OSAC), the HF Fund has granted more than
$200,000 in scholarships to over 130 college-bound Oregonians since 1996. The
HF Fund is particularly interested in students who have demonstrated personal
fortitude and persistence in overcoming obstacles in their lives. Students who
have volunteered in their community also receive additional consideration. HF
Fund follows the progress of recipients throughout the academic year.
Community Partnership Programs
In an effort to reach more students, particularly outside urban areas, the HF
Fund is establishing community-centered scholarship programs. Local community
leaders identify candidates, embark on fundraising campaigns and receive matching
funds from the HF Fund.
Direct Emergency Assistance:
Removing Obstacles to Success
On occasion, students meet unforeseen financial hardship that jeopardizes their
ability to continue their education. The HF Fund provides emergency assistance
to students with a demonstrated need, thereby enabling them to stay on the path
of achieving their educational goals.
Grants to Other Charitable Organizations
In addition to educational work, HF Fund contributes to a variety of organizations
including environmental, cultural, humanitarian and social services. Donations
have been made to groups as diverse as The Nature Conservancy, Portland Baroque
Orchestra, Dollars for Scholars, American Red Cross, Wallace Medical Concern,
Oregon Food Bank, and Dogs for the Deaf. Recently, HF Fund has given larger capital
grants to the Oregon Coast Aquarium and the new Children's Museum.
New Frontiers
HF Fund envisions expanding its efforts further to include support for students
entering a variety of educational programs that will help them meet the challenges
of the 21st century.
